This is the love story

between one family

& an old building.

Family photos in film and black frames of the Ilg Family lining the staircase at 11th Avenue Hostel.

We didn’t plan to own Denver’s largest hostel, but what began with the purchase of an old downtown hotel in 1988 slowly became a dream to preserve and restore a historic property into the hostel we have always wanted to stay in.

From 2019-2022 we spent all our time devoted to renovating that 1903 hotel into the hostel of our dreams. While the world was panicked at the sudden changes in society, and many, many people lost their jobs, we were right along with them, making no money, our doors shuttered, pulling staples out of the floor.

Ignorance truly is bliss, because when those horribly difficult, soul-crushing years wrapped up, and we threw our doors open officially in February 2022, no one knew just how much we sacrificed to get there. No one knew the love and sweat and tears it took to get the fresh linens on each bed, the paint on each wall, and the A/C blowing cold air. After four decades of owning and operating our historic building, we brought it into the 21st century to serve a whole new generation of travelers.

It is one of the great honors of our lifetimes to provide a safe, clean, and economical space for travelers from every country in the world to fall in love with Denver. The magic of this job is not lost on us, and we are so grateful you chose to support small business, and love our hostel.

Throughout the hostel, you will see mementos of the family members who have loved this building since 1988, and ensured it was preserved for future travelers.
